LASER is a 100% volunteer-run organization founded in 2023 that is passionate about expanding STEAM education opportunities that are affordable and accessible to all students in the rural areas that we serve. In 2024 LASER achieved 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
LASER is like...Graduate School meets "Whose line is it anyways?" meets "School of Rock."
Is that different enough?...
OUR FOCUS:
We are here to democratize STEAM education. Our programs are created with affordability and accessibility at the forefront of all that we do; this removes cost as a barrier to learning as many other for-profit education companies do. We have some of the cheapest rates in the state for a privately funded organization (see our Donate page direct comparisons).
Our programs are student led with a focus on student-first experiences.
Student led means that we empower students to dream big, swing for the fences, and we equip them to hit the home run.
Student led means that we give students autonomy to think creatively and help shape their experiences at LASER so that everyone can enjoy it more.
Student-first experiences means that we plan like an adult but think like a kid. Our environment is dynamic. Fun is waiting around every corner, with each day, each hour holding something new, something unexpected.
Student-first means we're more concerned with how students grow as individuals over their performance.
If it's boring, we're not doing it.
If we do this right, we say "yes" to kids' ideas vastly more than we say "no."
OUR HOLISTIC APPROACH:
We challenge every norm of "how things have been done" as we reimagine the learning environment.
Everything we do is with a purpose because every moment is a learning moment.
Robotics has an abundance of science, technology, engineering and math, but we add another dimension.
We take a holistic approach by fusing technical instruction with various art forms (drawing, writing, music, comedy, and dance) to prepare students to think creatively, collaborate successfully, and understand how to maintain positive mental health.
We teach them how to think on their feet, how to think outside the box, how to approach problems from different angles, how to think of others, and how to form a positive self image.
The cognitive development of a student is of the utmost importance and we provide a greenhouse environment for them to grow in ALL directions.
The problems of tomorrow are not solved with the solutions of today.
We need well-rounded, creative, courageous, resilient leaders who can forge new solutions.
Peer review serves as a feedback mechanism to help students refine their ideas.
Stand up. Stand out. Defend your ideas.

Louisa Area Students Educational Robotics (LASER) provides students with STEAM skills for life through robotics.
LASER provides students with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) skills for life through student-driven cooperative robotics and coding activities so that they can learn important concepts about collaboration, teamwork, creativity, problem solving, engineering, critical thinking skills, and feel empowered to pursue technical degrees and vocations that are not widely represented in the rural area we serve.
